Make your XP faster
Everyone wants its PC runs faster. Change hardware and software may be the solution you seek. But alternative way may tune your PC. Here are some tips I found from the web, they may help you:
- use regedit to set the value of HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Memory Management\DisablePagingExecutive to 1
- Check your CPU L2 Cache, and set the value HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Memory Management\SecondLevelDataCahche equal to size of L2 Cache
Pentium MMX -> 512
Pentium II -> 512
Pentium III -> 512
Pentium III Coppermine -> 256
P4 Willamette -> 256
P4 Northwood -> 512
Athlon XP -> 384 - Set the value of HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Memory Management\LargeSystemCache to 1
- Move your pagefile.sys to faster hdd if you have more than one hdd more the pagefile.sys to fat32 hdd. Fat32 hdd is faster than NTFS hdd.
- Make the large file transfer performance by set the value of HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Memory Management\IoPageLockLimit to 10000 (64MB: 1000; 128MB: 4000; 256MB: 10000; 512MB or above: 40000)
- Create RAM drive if your hdd more than 1GB. Download RAMDrive XP from www.cenatek.com and install. After create RAM drive, move the windows temp folder to ram drive.
- To shutdown windows faster:
- Disable Remote Assistance & Remote Desktop (for XP) - Kill and live apps faster, set followings:
- HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop\HungAppTimeOut = 1000 (Reg_Sz) (Original: 5000)
- HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop\WaitToKillAppTimeOut = 1000 (Original: 20000)
- HKEY_Users\Default\ControlPanel\Desktop\HungAppTimeOut = 1000 (Original: 5000)
- HKEY_Users\Default\ControlPanel\Desktop\WaitToKillAppTimeOut = 1000 (Original: 20000)
- HKCM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\WaitToKillServiceTimeOut = 1000 (Original: 20000) - Auto Terminate Program:
- KEY_Current_User\ControlPanel\Desktop\AutoEndTasks=1 (Original: 0) - Clear Temp File and Defragment your hdd regularly.
- Clear Prefetch regularly (c:\windows\prefetch)
- If you are using PC at home, set followings services to manual instead of automatically:
- Wireless Zero Configuration (if no wireless devices plugged in your system)
- Computer Browser
- Distributed Link Tracking Client - Turn off indexing
- Set DMA mode for HDD and CDROM
- Set IE home page to blank page or start IE with parameter nohome.
